About the Workshop
Join us for one of our more specialized risograph workshops! Learn how to turn full color photography and other images into beautiful four color riso prints!
In this workshop we will explore the history of four color printing and use of halftones in printmaking. We will walk through the process of setting up a full color image to print on the riso as a four color CMYK process print. The process of setting up these kinds of files can be confusing and frustrating, but we will have fun learning the how and why of four color printing. In the end you’ll walk away with a gorgeous print edition, a collection of the prints made by fellow workshop attendees, a step by step guide to reference for future four color prints, and several other helpful takeaways and downloads. We will be making an edition of four color prints, using the combination of fluorescent pink, aqua, yellow and black.
Each participant will bring their own photos to print in the class—they can be digital or film (we have a scanner here that we can use)!
Supplies Needed
A laptop with Adobe Photoshop (or similar program) installed.
3-5 full color images, of which one will be selected to print as an 8x10” art print. Photos can be digital or printed/film.
Prerequisites
We ask that participants take our Riso Basics workshop before signing up for this class. You don’t have to be an expert! If you have any previous riso experience you’ll be set. Please contact us if you have any questions!
Skill Level
Some basic risograph experience—if you’ve printed in the past or took our Riso Basics workshop years ago and need a refresher, that’s ok! We do a quick risograph review in each workshop.
This class is taught using Adobe Photoshop but participants don’t need to be proficient in the program. We welcome alternative applications similar to Photoshop but may not be able to navigate and teach the specifics of other programs.
Workshop Fee & Ticketing
Your ticket includes the workshop, compensation for the instructor(s), an edition of your own 4 color 8x10” prints, a collection of the other prints made in the class, and several printed takeaways and digital downloads.

If there’s any way we can make your visit feel more comfortable or safe please let us know.
In an effort to keep our classes accessible to everyone and to keep our most vulnerable community members safe we offer masked and mask optional workshops. When you get your ticket you will be asked if you require masks or are ok with a mask optional class. If one or more people request masks we will ask that everyone who attends wear masks (including the instructors). Please note that even if you select a mask optional workshop we may still ask you to mask depending on the other attendees who sign up. We always have masks here for you to use. About the Space & Instructors
Outlet is a risograph print shop, community maker space, and the studio of Kate Bingaman-Burt and Leland Vaughan. We host workshops, pop-up events, and other projects and offer an array of services from printing, button making, binding, and more! We're the home of a zine library and more art supplies, making tools, and collage materials than we know what to do with. We also rent our space and offer in-person open hours where folks can print, make buttons, and hang out. Outlet is based out of Portland, Oregon and was founded in 2017.
Kate is Outlet’s part owner and has her studio upstairs where she illustrates for clients all over the world. She draws, letters, documents, and collects, but she also does a lot of other things that involve energy, conversation, and exchange. Kate loves creating spaces that make people want to MAKE! Along with running Outlet and leading workshops here, she’s the Associate Director of the School of Art & Design and a graphic design professor at Portland State University.
Leland is Outlet’s other part owner and studio manager! They’re a graphic designer, illustrator, and a riso print nerd! Leland is the organizational force behind Outlet—from printing to workshops, events, pop-ups, bookkeeping, inventory, and more—and is most likely the person you’re emailing with about everything risograph-related. They’ve got a thing for spreadsheets, fixing riso printers when they break, and they have an eye for detail when it comes to printing.
